WINCHESTER — A Frederick County man is in jail after an alleged drunken rampage Tuesday in which he is accused of smashing multiple car mirrors and threatening a driver at knife-point in Winchester’s Jim Barnett Park.
Eliseo Gomez Lopez, 38, of the 100 block of Nature Drive near Stephens City, is charged with four counts of destruction of property, as well as attempted wounding and public intoxication. On Tuesday he was denied bond in Winchester General District Court.
According to court documents, Winchester police responded to Jim Barnett Park for reports of Gomez Lopez “smashing vehicle’s [sic] mirrors” with what eyewitnesses believed to be a hammer. Upon arrival, officers discovered three cars with their side mirrors destroyed. They then located Gomez Lopez, who had a knife.
Police learned that Gomez Lopez had reportedly smashed the windows of a fourth vehicle and held the knife to the driver’s side, saying “do you want to die” to the car’s occupant, according to court records.
According to police, Gomez Lopez exhibited slurred speech and had a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person.” He was then taken into custody.
Court records indicate that the damage Gomez Lopez allegedly did to the vehicles totals more than $4,000.
The incident marks the second time Gomez Lopez has been charged with public intoxication this year.
On June 19, he was caught “actively drinking a Modelo beer, which was almost empty, and carrying another” while walking on South Pleasant Valley Road, according to court records. He was subsequently charged with public intoxication and drinking alcohol in public. He pleaded guilty to public intoxication and was assessed a fine of $25. The other charge was dismissed.
Gomez Lopez is currently being held at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center near Winchester. He has a progress hearing scheduled for Jan. 15 in general district court.
