Calgary police charge man in Inglewood park brush fire

Calgary police have charged a man accused of deliberately setting a brush fire in the Inglewood area after he admitted his crime to the first responders working to put the blaze out.

Police say officers patrolling the area noticed a large cloud of black smoke coming from a wooded area in Pearce Estate Park in Inglewood around 6 p.m. Monday. Officers arrived to find firefighters on scene working to extinguish the blaze, but helped evacuate the park as a precaution.

The fire grew to around three acres in size. No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.
The suspect was not hard to find, say police, as he approached first responders and admitted to setting the fire.
"The man told police he collected white fluffy debris that had fallen off nearby trees, placed it in a pile on the ground, and subsequently lit it on fire," said police in a news release.
Danny Manuel Deringer, 33, has been charged with a single count of arson. He's scheduled to appear in court on July 7.
