With This Wet-to-Dry Styling Tool, I Feel Like a Hair Pro
The multistyler can seriously do everything.
Styling my hair has never been my strong suit. I can do a slicked-back high bun and a few basic braiding techniques, but my skills in the hair department are def not where I'd like them to be—especially considering I write about beauty for a living (oops!).
One style I've always particularly wanted to master is the perfect, salon-level blowout. Every time I get my hair done professionally, I find myself in awe of how my stylist effortlessly wields both the round brush and the blow-dryer through the layers. And while there have been plenty of advancements in the hair-tool category in the past few years (looking at you, blow-dry brushes!), most have still proven to be somewhat tricky for a beginner like me. But finally, the Shark FlexFusion + Straight landed on my doorstep—and a styling star (me again) was born.
When I opened the box, I have to be honest: The first word that came to mind was…intimidating. The tool is an ultra-fast dryer that morphs into a multistyler with the included Wet-or-Dry Fusion Brush, Wet-or-Dry Fusion Air Straightener, two 1.25-inch Auto-Wrap Curlers, and Styling Concentrator. The brush and straightener work with FlexFusion Styling technology which combines powerful airflow and heat ceramic fused together, and the dryer features an innovative technology called Scalp Shield Mode, which was developed with dermatologists to protect the scalp from extreme heat.
All of which is great—but with this many attachments, I was worried I wouldn't be able to get the hang of using the thing. However, after being brave enough to give the tool a few tries, I'm happy to report that it's truly easy enough for anyone to use—and that it makes my hair look amazing (yes, brag).
First, a little about the state of my hair: It is wavy, color-treated (with years of double-process blonde), and prone to dryness and tangles. I typically wash my hair two to three times a week, alternating between air-drying and blow-drying depending on my mood. The first time I used the FlexFusion, I washed and conditioned my hair as usual, then I rough dried in Scalp Shield Mode before snapping on the Wet-or-Dry Fusion Brush attachment (the brand recommends styling on slightly damp hair in wet mode).
From there, I flipped my head upside down, gave my hair a rough dry, then tried to mimic the motions I've seen hairstylists use to create volume and shape. The results instantly impressed me—my hair was super-smooth yet voluminous, and I was able to fully dry it with no heat damage using just the Wet-or-Dry Fusion Brush, which is not only not recommended with other styling brushes, it's also practically impossible.
The next test was to see if my blowout lasted through the night—which, you guessed it, it did, without any help from hairspray. To style, I tried one of the tool's auto-wrap curlers. And as amazed as I'd been by the brush, I soon found the auto-wrap curlers are the true star of the show. All I had to do spritz my hair with water to add back some moisture (the attachment works best on slightly damp hair) and then hold a section of my hair a few inches from the curler, and bam—the hot air instantly wrapped my strands around the barrel without a snag, where I held them for a few seconds before sliding out to reveal a perfect coil. It was the quickest, easiest curling routine I've ever tried.
Prefer a sleeker look? That's where the Wet-or-Dry Fusion Air Straightener comes in. As the name suggests, it's a flat-iron attachment with powerful airflow that can be used on wet hair to achieve an ultra-sleek finish without heat damage. Somehow, the straightener dried my damp hair just as quickly and easily as the Wet-or-Dry Fusion Brush attachment had—only instead of giving me bouncy waves, it left my hair shiny and sleek.
After a week of using the FlexFusion every day to try out different styles, on both wet and dry hair, I've had more back-to-back great hair days than ever. Now I just need to figure out what I'm going to do with all the time and money I'll be saving by forgoing those salon blowouts.
